Friday Five – the Hello-Again-Manuscript Edition

1.

It’s back! The Ever Afters 3–with a letter and comments from my editor–came to me a week ago. I’ve been working on it since then.

The biggest note from my lovely editor Julia was to CUT, and I’m totally okay with that–I kind of already knew that it was too long. The book will be a lot better with stuff shaved off. However, my revision outline/To-Do list is 2,000 words long.

So, I’ll be busy until June 13, but overall, it’s not too scary or painful.

2.

I don’t want to get so busy that I start ignoring my health like I did earlier this year. I’ve had a mild health concern recently. I was exhibiting symptoms of Hypothyroidism, which runs in my family like whoa (it’s not life-threatening in any way, but it can make you super sleepy, gain weight, lose hair, etc.).

But the doctor checked for me, and it wasn’t that. It was just stress.

That’s kind of shocking actually. I mean, it’s understandable, considering that I had to finish a long manuscript in a short amount of time, but still shocking.

Stress is BAD. I have my dream job. I should not be so stressed that it affects my health.

It was kind of a wake up call: I love being an author. I love writing, revising, and hanging out with my readers–online and in person. But I need to take care myself too, especially if I want to keep doing this over the long haul.

So, this month, I’m making a serious effort toward healthy habits.

3.

First, I’m cutting back on some things. One of them is the internet. For now, at least until this manuscript is done, I’m going to answer my email and blog comments only on Tuesdays and Fridays.

I absolutely love talking to you guys. I’m so delighted to have the chance to interact with y’all, and I’m happy whenever someone writes in. But at times like this, when I get busy like I am now, I either stay up really late to make sure I answer right away, or I feel really guilty about not answering right away. This is a stress I’m putting on myself, and to manage it, I’m setting aside special times to chat with y’all.

So, just know: I <3 y’all like whoa, and expect to hear from me on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Another thing I’m cutting back on = housework. But that one has kind of backfired since I’m beginning to run out of laundry… Whoops!

4.

Here’s something I’m adding: I’m exercising seriously for the first time in maybe seven years. Like writing out workouts and sticking to them. Like actually visiting the gym and lifting weights.

I love lifting weights! I totally forgot!! When I was a rower, I did it every year between the ages of thirteen and nineteen, and then other things took over. But now I’m back and it’s kind of awesome to feel strong again.

Also awesome is using up all the adrenaline that stress gives you. 🙂

And random bonus: it’s good for your bones! You lose your bone density slower in your 50’s/60’s/70’s, etc. if you weight train consistently.

5.

Wow, this got long. Sorry, guys! Not intentional.

Another thing I’m doing is little side trips that I do just for fun. Last Monday, I went to the Oregon shore, and I will share all the pretty pics with you next week. But here’s a preview:
